The Seiko Presage collection of timepieces In 2012, Seiko celebrated another success, with the world's first GPS solar watch, also from the Astron range. A precision spring drive makes the watches more accurate than a purely mechanical timepiece. The Spring Drive technology, introduced in 1999, was also considered an exclusive world first. The company even developed the world's first quartz watch, the Quartz Astron, which was first available in 1969. Some of the brand's watch technologies were adopted and are now considered the global standard in the watch market. The company handles the entire production process itself, and is also responsible for the manufacture of all the individual parts. This entrepreneurial spirit continues to this day, even after the founder's passing. At the age of 22, he already had a strong business sense and opened a shop in the centre of Tokyo, where he offered watches for sale and also accepted them for repair. Seiko was founded in 1881 by Japanese entrepreneur Kintaro Hattori.
